'Foundation' drops second epic trailer for Asimov-inspired sci-fi series on Apple TV+

Warner Bros. may have delayed Denis Villeneuve's Dune blockbuster by another three weeks, but that's okay. Fans of hard science fiction won't have to wait long for an epic story about upheaval set against the backdrop of an intergalactic empire because Apple TV+ will premiere its Foundation series this coming September. The series just dropped its second epic trailer today.

Jared Harris (Chernobyl) stars as Dr. Hari Seldon, a man with dangerous ideas powerful enough to topple a royal genetic dynasty that's ruled over thousands of worlds for nearly four centuries. Seldon and his loyal band of followers travel to the far reaches of the galaxy in an effort to preserve the future of civilization. Ruffled by Hari's claims, the Cleons — a long line of emperor clones (led by Lee Pace's Brother Day) — "fear their grasp on the galaxy may be weakening as they’re forced to reckon with the potential reality of losing their legacy forever," reads the official synopsis.

What ensues is a sort of Game of Thrones in space full of shifting alliances, deadly crises, and complex character dynamics.

David S. Goyer (co-writer on major Hollywood blockbusters like The Dark Knight and Man of Steel) serves as executive producer and showrunner for the project, which is based upon the influential novels penned by Isaac Asimov.

"In the decades since the Foundation series first saw print, Asimov’s prophetic science-fiction work has never been more relevant than it is now,” Goyer said in a statement back in June. "Growing up, I devoured Foundation and dreamed of one day seeing it on screen — but a feature film didn’t seem big enough to embrace the ambition. Thanks to the broader landscape of streaming and a valuable partnership with Apple and Skydance, we are able to bring the series to the screen in a way that truly does it justice. Foundation has always been at the top of my bucket list and I’m honored I get to play a part in finally bringing it to life. Whether you're a fan of the novels or simply someone craving a mind-blowing epic, I’m excited to share with you what we’ve created."

Lou Llobell (Voyagers), Leah Harvey (Les Misérables), Laura Birn (The Innocents), Terrence Mann (Critters), Alfred Enoch (Harry Potter), and Cassian Bilton, co-star alongside Harris and Pace. Robyn Asimov, Josh Friedman, Cameron Welsh, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Bill Bost are executive producers.

The first two episodes of Foundation premiere on Apple TV+ Friday, Sep. 24. The remaining eight installments will then debut every Friday after that.
