James Corden shares a surprisingly feasible Avengers: Endgame fan theory
After trying and failing to wheedle plot details out of guests, Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/The Winter Solider), the British comedian shared what he believes will be the outcome of the final assault on Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Endgame, which arrives this coming spring.
"All the people that disintegrated into dust and all the people that stayed, I think it's a switch," said Corden. I think all the people that disintegrated, they're back and they carry on, and the people that stayed, they've gone. That's my hunch."
"Avengers: Tag Team," added a bemused Smulders, whose character (along with Stan's) disappeared in Avengers: Infinity War after Thanos snapped his Infinity Gauntlet-ed fingers.
The more you think about Corden's working theory, the more it makes sense. Many fans have already surmised that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) will meet their demises in the fourth Avengers movie, all in the name of bringing back Peter Parker (Tom Holland), T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Groot (Vin Diesel), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and the rest.
This idea gained more momentum by the fact that Stark was noticeably absent from the first Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer released earlier this week. Moreover, Downey and Evans' Marvel contracts only run through Endgame and no one would blame them if they were ready to retire their on-screen Marvel identities after playing these characters for over a decade.
Marvel Studios still has plenty of heroes with which to open a brand-new chapter in the annals of the MCU, especially with the Fox merger about to close. Killing off the old guard would be a perfect way to wrap up 10-year-old arcs and set the stage for a new generation of crime fighters.
Avengers: Endgame opens in theaters April 26.
