Dinos and Templars, oh my! Jurassic World, Assassin’s Creed & more coming to Oculus VR

It’s one thing to watch someone else try to outsmart velociraptors in the movies — but it’s something altogether different when it’s you who’s fleeing the clever beasts in virtual reality. Now, thanks to a big new push that’s bringing Jurassic World and a pair of big Ubisoft gaming franchises onto the Oculus Quest platform, it won’t be long before we get a  frighteningly realistic taste of being second on the food chain when dinosaurs rule the Earth.

Oculus has just announced it’s working with studio partners to bring games based on the Jurassic WorldAssassin's Creed, and Splinter Cell franchises into virtual reality, including Jurassic World Aftermath — a VR game set two years after the park’s disastrous come-apart.

In the game, you're tasked with heading back to Isla Nublar to recover vital information, but things go disastrously sideways when you enter one of the park’s abandoned research facilities ... and (of course) can’t get out. “Your only hope of escape is to recover the confidential research for your employers on the mainland as quickly as possible, all while being hunted by deadly velociraptors unwittingly set loose during the island’s evacuation,” teases Oculus. “To survive in this adventure, you’ll need to explore the research facility, solve puzzles, and find ways to distract and hide from the ferocious velociraptors that stalk your every move.”

We’ve seen how that scenario can play out in the movies, so it’s a real shame we can’t bring Jurassic Park game warden Robert Muldoon along for some extra backup. Developed in partnership with Oculus Studios, Universal Games and Digital Platforms, and U.K.-based Coatsink Games, Jurassic World Aftermath is heading to Oculus Quest later this year.

Looking farther ahead, Oculus is also teasing a pair of VR adventures that rope in two of the biggest names in Ubisoft’s gaming library: Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. Both AAA franchises are heading to VR with all-new titles that’ll features stories and characters that slot neatly into their respective lore-worlds, and both are being developed for the Oculus platform by Ubisoft’s Red Storm, in collaboration with Ubisoft Reflections, Ubisoft Dusseldorf, and Ubisoft Mumbai.

We don’t yet know the name of either game, and in the early going, details on both titles — including story, characters, and release dates — are super-light. But we can already see the VR potential, especially with Splinter Cell — where virtual reality is sure to open up new possibilities for sneakily negotiating your hostile surroundings.
