TV THIS WEEK: Mulan world premiere; The Boys’ bloody return; Netflix goes ‘Away’ and more

It's relatively light on network TV and cable this week, but don't worry, streaming is coming through big time to help carry the load as we head into September. Let's break it all down.

After being delayed a few times, then finally making the full shift to streaming, the would-be blockbuster Mulan has arrived. The film hits Disney+ this week as a premium VOD release as the Mouse House looks to safely get the film out for viewers to check out as theaters slowly reopen. On the opposite side of the spectrum, Amazon Prime has the Season 2 premiere of the very not family-friendly superhero series The Boys. It's big, bloody and amazing.

If you're looking for something a bit more dramatic and profound, Netflix has the premiere of its new original space-set series Away from producer Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood). It stars Hillary Swank as an astronaut leaving her family behind for a year-long mission. Digging a bit deeper, HBO has a new Lovecraft Country and The CW has a new Dead Pixels.

On the movie side, we've also spotlighted a few options — including some performances from the dearly departed Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman. There's also Blumhouse's Fantasy Island hitting STARZ, Spies in Disguise on HBO, and a few sci-fi classics we've flagged if you're wanting a deeper cut.

Check out our full rundown below and let us know what you'll be watching this week.

HIGHLIGHTS

42 (Paramount), Monday 7PM

NETWORK PREMIERE: Obviously, this isn't a genre film. But it's one of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman's best performances, bringing Jackie Robinson's story to life. If you've never seen it, it's a great performance and worth checking out: In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford), general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, signs Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team in defiance of major league baseball's notorious color barrier.

Mulan (Disney+), Friday - Worldwide Premiere

Disney's latest live action adaptation of an animated fan favorite skips the theater and comes straight to premium VOD. The premium offering will cost an additional $29.99 to unlock the film, and it's only available to purchase from inside Disney+ (so you'll also have to be a Disney+ subscriber to get it). That said, the film looks to be one of the bigger blockbusters of 2020 — and it's being beamed straight into your living room.

The Boys (Amazon Prime), Friday - Season 2

In a more intense, more desperate Season 2 of The Boys, Butcher, Hughie and the team reel from their losses in Season 1. On the run from the law, they struggle to fight back against the Superheroes. As Vought, the company that manages the heroes, cashes in on the panic over the threat of Supervillains, and a new hero, Stormfront, shakes up the company and challenges an already unstable Homelander.

Away (Netflix), Friday - Season 1

From the visionary who brought you Friday Night Lights comes an epic, emotional story of love and sacrifice, starring two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank.
