All the genre TV and movies coming to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime in February 2019

By Trent Moore
The Umbrella Academy Netflix

We have one high-profile new genre show coming to streaming this month, a few interesting originals outside of that, and some fantastic TV shows and film series you’ll almost certainly want to revisit. So, here’s what’s streaming this month.

Netflix’s biggest rollout is almost certainly the comic-based Umbrella Academy series, which is garnering solid buzz for its X-Men-esque, punk-rock tale. The streaming service is also dropping its original horror thriller Velvet Buzzsaw, which looks to be an artistically killer flick. Netflix is also beefing up its horror bona fides with the Jaws back catalog.

Hulu doesn’t have much in the originals this month (aside from a new episode of horror anthology Into the Dark), but it makes up for it in volume. The second season of FX’s acclaimed Legion comes to the streaming service, along with the original two Mortal Kombat films. Hulu also has some deep cuts like Deep Blue Sea, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Quiet Ones, and Archer: Danger Island.

Amazon’s lineup is arguably a bit thin, but it does have one heavy-hitter: The Expanse’s third season, fresh off its original run on SYFY. Amazon is producing the show’s fourth season, so this makes for a great chance to catch-up.

Check out our full rundown below and let us know what you’ll be bingeing.

NETFLIX

HIGHLIGHTS

The Jaws catalog: You’re gonna need a bigger boat. Or, umm, TV? The Jaws catalog is heading to Netflix, and it’ll make for the perfectly terrifying binge. We’re all missing summer, so what better way to beat the cold than remembering all the deadly stuff that can get you on the beach?

Velvet Buzzsaw: This freaky Netflix original film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, reunited with Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy. It’s basically a horror satire, framed around the world of high-class art with some deadly, vaguely supernatural twists. Reviews have been a bit mixed, but the film certainly boasts some interesting ideas and striking visuals.

The Umbrella Academy: if you’re looking for a new favorite show in February, this looks to be an early contender. Based on the comic of the same name, the series is basically X-Men meets, well, something much weirder and wilder. The early trailer looks great, and the concept looks to be well-suited to the binge format. This will definitely be one to watch.

HULU

HIGHLIGHTS

Mortal Kombat films: They might be cheesy, but these video game adaptations were absolutely staples of the '90s — and now they’re available to revisit in all their fatality-filled glory. Sure, they probably don’t hold up all that well, but they still make for one bloody nostalgic romp.

Into the Dark: Hulu’s horror anthology looks to bring a terrifying new tale, just in time for Valentine’s Day. If you’re looking for something to fill the void between new Black Mirror and Jordan Peele’s upcoming Twilight Zone reboot, you could do far worse.

Legion (Season 2): FX’s ambitious, trippy, high-concept comic book series only got better in its second season. The world got a little bigger and the longterm story finally started to come into focus. The series is pushing the limits of what you can do within the comic book format, and if you missed it the first time around, it’s the perfect time to catch up.

AMAZON PRIME

HIGHLIGHTS

The Matrix Trilogy: The first film is an uncontested modern classic, but it’s the other two movies that typically get forgotten when you’re talking about all-time favorites. With Amazon lining up all three films, it could make for an interesting chance to revisit the trilogy with fresh eyes. Plus, it’s still hard to beat that action.

The Expanse (Season 3): Amazon is hard at work producing a fourth season of the former SYFY original series The Expanse, but until then, catch up on the latest season as it finally comes to streaming. If you missed the third season when it aired on SYFY, the dense space opera arguably makes more sense as a binge, anyway.
