The Fantastic Beasts franchise is back at long last with the first magical trailer for the franchise's third magical entry: The Secrets of Dumbledore. The upcoming Wizarding World film, which opens in April, was directed by the returning David Yates (he previously helmed four Harry Potter adaptations and the last two Fantastic Beasts titles). Instead of flying solo for this magical adventure, J.K. Rowling shares script credit with seasoned Potter screenwriter, Steve Kloves.

Thanks to this batch of debut footage, fans finally have a rough inkling of how the "Credence-is-a-long-lost-Dumbledore-sibling" reveal will play out. For one thing, another Dumbledore sibling — Albus's little brother, Aberforth (Richard Coyle), and gruff proprietor of the Hog's Head pub — is making his return. In addition to the high-stakes plan to stop Grindelwald from conquering the Muggle world, it's also plain to see that audiences can also expect a menagerie of new monsters — both big and small; deadly and benign.

Eddie Redmayne is back as the bashful and kind-hearted magical zoologist Newt Scamander, leading a slew of familiar wand carriers: Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller), Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol), Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), Yusuf Kama (William Nadylam), Bunty (Victoria Yeates), Nagini (Claudia Kim), and Theseus Scamander (Callum Turner).

Jessica Williams is getting a much more expanded role in The Secrets of Dumebldore as Professor Eulalie Hicks of Ilvermorny, America's equivalent of Hogwarts. Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, Rogue One), meanwhile, steps into the role of dark wizard and Dumbledore's past love, Gellert Grindelwald. Mikkelsen replaced Johnny Depp after the latter was asked to exit the series.

As you can see, the trailer is riddled with callbacks to the Potter books and films — from the Golden Snitch to the Room of Requirement. How many Easter eggs were you able to catch?

Oh, and Jacob gets a wand of his own! Though we suspect it doesn't do anything and is simply given to him by Dumbledore (always known for his small acts of kindness) in an effort to help make him feel like he's actually part of the team.

Filming for the third installment was originally scheduled to begin in March 2020, but was ultimately delayed by a full six months over health concerns related to the novel coronavirus, which wreaked havoc on production schedules all across world. The project's United Kingdom-based shoot finally began in late September of 2020.

Exclusively speaking with SYFY WIRE just as the health crisis was beginning to take shape, Fogler teased a "massive war" set against the backdrop of World War II. "You can just imagine epic battle scenes are coming," he said. Longtime Potter fans know that the war culminates in Dumbledore's epic duel with Grindelwald in 1945 that netted Albus the Elder Wand and a Chocolate Frog card.

When Depp — who had already filmed a number of scenes for Secrets of Dumbledore — parted ways with the project in November of 2020, the studio pushed the theatrical release date back to July of 2022. The movie was ultimately moved up three months to April of next year when the official title was revealed back in late September.
