Things aren’t letting up in southern California, where comics and movie fans are releasing two years’ worth of stay-at-home tensions with their first chance to gather in person since 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con. The cosplay creativity continued Saturday on Day 2 of San Diego Comic-Con Special Edition, with new-for-2021 outfits showing up to send a little love to the movies that’ve dropped in the past year.

Yep, fans put their paint and prosthetics to good use on Saturday, tipping the hat to recent releases like Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Space Jam: A New Legacy — even as perennial faves from Gotham City, Star Wars, and the Marvel pantheon made their characteristic ‘Con appearances. Look closely and you might even spot Ahsoka Tano in the mix, looking sharp and ready for action ahead of her own upcoming Disney+ series.

The Thanksgiving weekend SDCC Special Edition marks the first chance in more than two years for ‘Con fans to mingle in person, after the COVID-19 pandemic put the kibosh on the annual gathering in favor of the online-only format of San Diego Comic-Con@Home. From Friday, Nov. 26 through Sunday, Nov. 28, fans descending on the San Diego Convention Center are making up for lost time at last — and as the cosplay looks from Saturday’s second day show, they definitely aren’t taking the opportunity for granted.

The followup event to July’s Comic-Con@Home edition of SDCC, Special Edition doesn’t have the ‘Con’s typical lineup of A-list panels from Hall H or hours of blowout movie trailers. Instead, it’s putting the focus back on the old-school community vibes that made SDCC a low-key destination for comic book lovers long before the ‘Con ever grew into the pop culture juggernaut it’s since become.

That means the fans get to be the stars of the show, and judging by the cosplay looks we’ve seen over the first two days, they’re rising to the occasion (and then some). From Carnage to Lola Bunny and more, browse and admire the cream of the cosplay crop from Saturday’s Special Edition…and stay tuned for even more costumed craziness from Sunday’s SDCC conclusion.
