Seth Green would voice Howard the Duck in the MCU again 'anytime they asked'

"You're out of luck until you've gone duck."

When James Gunn finally gets to work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it feels like there's a good chance he'll call up Seth Green to do another short cameo as everyone's favorite wise-cracking mallard: Howard the Duck. The classic Marvel character (conceived by Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik) made brief appearances in the first two Guardians films and even showed up for the final assault against Thanos near the end of Avengers: Endgame.

"I saw the Howard the Duck movie in theaters and I always thought that character was amazing because it is so weird and feels incredibly subversive," Green told SYFY WIRE during an interview about Robot Chicken's 200th episode. "But it’s also very funny because he’s got such an attitude and he’s so bitter. It’s one of the great thrills of my career to get to voice that character in the movies, or in any of the cartoons. While I probably can’t talk about plans, I can assure you that there are not any current plans to exploit that character in a larger way."

On that note, the actor touched on the animated Howard the Duck series that was coming to Hulu under the leadership of Kevin Smith before it was canceled earlier this year. As far as we know, Green was not officially hired to voice the titular, suit-wearing waterfowl, but he explains that "it was one of the [projects] that got shelved with all of the consolidations of these media companies." This is a reference to the fact that Marvel Television was folded into Marvel Studios after Kevin Feige was promoted to Chief Creative Officer in Fall 2019.

Nevertheless, Green did get to enter the animated television space as Howard in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Ultimate Spider-Man shows on Disney XD.

"Whether there would be anything else in the future or whether I would be asked to play the character in the future, I can’t say," he adds. "I could just say that I love it, I love getting to play that guy, and I would do it anytime they asked."

When we asked what he'd like to see Howard doing in Guardians Vol. 3, he has this to say:

"James Gunn is a brilliant director and one of my favorite storytellers, so if he had an idea for Howard in the third movie, I would just do it. I don’t have any hopes or dreams for the character in the future and I don’t really feel like it’s my place."
