The tension rises in this week's Star Wars: Resistance with 'A Quick Salvage Run'

Star Wars Resistance 2x02 2

Last week, Star Wars: Resistance set up the found family traveling story for us, and this week our heroes have hit the first of many snags. In "A Quick Salvage Run," the second episode of the season, Kaz and the gang have made it to the post-battle zone of D'Qar and are forced to salvage for hyperdrive fuel — all while the First Order is close on their tail.

Warning: This recap will contain spoilers for Episode 2, Season 2 of Star Wars Resistance.

Preeti: Talk about a tense episode! Resistance has really come into its own as a suspenseful piece of Star Wars storytelling.

Swapna: We knew what the team was going to find when they arrived at D’Qar, yet the writers still managed to ramp up the tension and keep me on the edge of my seat, especially during that space battle!

Preeti: It’s a unique ability that these writers have since, again, we know the outcome of a lot of the existing stories they’re working within, and so they have to be able to make us care deeply about these characters in these settings. I knew that in the end Doza and the Colossus would have to be able to make that hyperjump, but it didn’t take away from the intensity of the journey.

Swapna: I’m so happy the pirates are back, I was really excited to see Synara.

Preeti: Synara is such a great character! They’ve taken someone who has a moral compass but knows how easily that can be compromised. I’m glad she’s in on Kaz’s secret message to Tam, so she can give him some much-needed perspective. I have to admit, I’m a little frustrated by his continued naivete.

Swapna: I agree . . . BUT. It seemed like he might have been right about Tam? She seemed very reluctant to inform the First Order about Kaz’s message, and I don’t know that she would have if Jace Rucklin (aka Elijah Wood’s douche canoe) hadn’t caught her in the act of listening to it. Did you get that same sense?

Preeti: To an extent! (Also shout out to Elijah Wood's truly excellent douche-canoeing, to be honest.) I do agree that she reluctantly gave up Kaz’s location, but I think the secrecy is what I’m finding irritating. By keeping his attempted message to Tam a secret, Kaz is endangering the entire crew of the Colossus. It’s particularly glaring in light of his conversation with his father.

Swapna: That’s a great point — and it’s what got him into trouble with Tam in the first place. I’m not saying he should go around broadcasting that he’s part of the Resistance, but if you trust people and are using them for your mission, they should have an idea of the part they’re playing and for what cause. In this case, Kaz is making the same mistake, but on a bigger scale because the entire Colossus is at risk.

Preeti: Exactly! And let’s talk about what’s going with Tam, actually. The First Order is using some insidious tactics in order to use her. The deliberate lack of conditioning and instead choosing to keep Tam on the edge of the knife so they can use her for information is … pretty dark.

Swapna: Their tactics are chilling and ruthless and illuminating in a way that we don’t necessarily get to see in the movies. It’s part of why I love the shows so much because they fill in those smaller details.

Preeti: Getting to see these moments exist on the small screen does give us so much more! For example, I did really enjoy the conversation between Kaz and his dad. It felt like such an honest moment, of a father terrified and angry and all those emotions mixing in with relief that his son’s alive. It’s not necessarily something we see too often in the Star Wars universe — parents and children and what it means that kids are in the midst of the fighting.

Swapna: Yes! To be honest, with all the drama surrounding the Colossus, I forgot about Kaz’s parents until this scene. A lot of Star Wars is putting aside your personal pain in the interest of the greater cause, which is a hard thing for kids and teens to do. This scene really magnified that, especially when Kaz’s father told him that he was on the First Order’s radar and the entire family was in danger.

Preeti: We so rarely get to see that level of fear that isn’t immediately confronted by a moment of bravery. This episode wasn’t about bravery, it was about survival. I appreciate seeing that aspect of what it means to be in the middle of a war. It brings home the reality of that moment in Rogue One when Cassian says, “I’ve been in this fight since I was six-years-old.” Different war, same fight. Same realities.

Swapna: Speaking of the war, I didn’t expect to get to this point so soon, to be honest. We’re in the aftermath of The Last Jedi on the show, which means . . . where does Resistance go from here? This is starting to get really exciting in the run-up to The Rise of Skywalker.

Preeti: It took me a second to remember where we were in the plot, and when I realized, I was surprised. This is the true lead-up to The Rise of Skywalker because we are officially in uncharted territory. It really is so exciting!

Swapna: I think we’ll definitely fill in some holes because we know there’s a time jump between the end of The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Between this and Rebecca Roanhorse’s upcoming novel Resistance Reborn, I think we’re going to get some great hints.

Preeti: I can’t wait! Ah! So much Star Wars. Can’t handle it.
