The Batman: Gotham’s rogues come out to play in full DC FanDome trailer for Matt Reeves' reboot
Batman (literally) returns as Robert Pattinson's Caped Crusader stalks the dark and rain-soaked streets of Gotham City in the official trailer for The Batman. The new footage premiered at the second annual DC FanDome Saturday afternoon.
Director and co-writer Matt Reeves (Project Power scribe Mattson Tomlin shares script credit) doesn't seem to be pulling any punches with one of the most ruthless and nihilistic interpretations of the Dark Knight fans have ever seen in the realm of live action. Reeves promised to tap into the overt detective and hardboiled elements of classic Batman comics for this movie, and the trailer doesn't skimp on that sense of brooding cynicism we so often associate with film noir.
"When that light hits the sky, it’s not just a call…it’s a warning," Wayne says with regards to the Bat-signal operated by a pre-Commissioner Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright). And yeah, that's followed by plenty of shots of Gotham's gravel-voiced vigilante beating the ever-loving snot out of criminals. Speaking of, the footage also provides a scrumptious tasting platter of classic Batman rogues like Riddler (Paul Dano), Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), and Penguin (Colin Farrell, who is completely unrecognizable in both look and sound).

“For some reason, Batman just always stood out,” Pattinson said in the short featurette that played before a FanDome conversation between the actor, Reeves, and Kravitz. "It’s one of the major characters of the 20th century and so many people connect to him on such a deep level and for so many different reasons. The first conversation I had with Matt about it, I just knew there was something radically different from anything we’d seen in Batman movies before.”
Inspired by definitive comic book arcs like Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's Year One, this latest big screen reboot takes place in the early days of Bruce Wayne's vigilante career. Full of rage and inexperience, Bruce must contend with a Zodiac-like killer that leaves behind taunting messages with the bodies of the victims.
“I felt that we’d seen lots of origin stories," Reeves explained in the behind-the-scenes sneak peek. "We’d seen things go further and further into fantasy and I felt, ‘Well, one place we haven’t been is grounding it the way that Year One does. To come right into a young Batman — not be an origin tale, but refer to his origins and shake him to his core.'"
Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), Peter Sarsgaard (Gotham DA, Gil Colson), Jayme Lawson (Gotham mayoral hopeful, Bella Reál), and Andy Serkis (Bruce's loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth) co-star.

Reeves debuted the movie's first teaser trailer — which evoked a strong David Fincher vibe — at the inaugural edition of DC FanDome last summer. Not long after the virtual con, production resumed in the U.K., but stopped just a few days later after Pattinson reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. Filming restarted in mid-September of 2020, with on-set photos dropping not longer after. Principal photography wrapped in March of this year. All the pandemic-related stops and starts forced Warner Bros. to push the title's theatrical bow to early 2022.
The Batman swoops into theaters everywhere on March 4, 2022 — more than a year after its intended release date. Two spinoff shows (one centered around the Gotham PD, the other around Farrell's Penguin) are currently in development at HBO Max.
