Utopia's first trailer brings 'the end of the world' via viral pandemic at Comic-Con@Home

By Jacob Oller

Amazon's Utopia just dropped its first trailer, and the subject matter — the coming end of the world via viral pandemic — is a touchy one. But if anyone is going to handle it for Amazon, it would be master of black humor Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl). The spooky-snarky show, which follows a group of comic nerds who find a vast conspiracy in the pages of their favorite cult comic series, debuted its first footage at its Comic-Con@Home panel.

The eight-episode first season looks to put the world in very familiar danger as a few scientists and doctors (John Cusack's Dr. Kevin Christie, Cory Michael Smith's Thomas Christie, and Rainn Wilson's Dr. Michael Stearns) look at a problem perhaps too serious for the group of dorky, con-attending comic fans (Ashleigh LaThrop, Dan Byrd, Desmin Borges, Javon Walton, and Jessica Rothe) to handle.

And, for fans of the original show, there's always the lingering question: Who is Jessica Hyde? Hyde, the main character of the in-universe comic (who also happens to be an actual person played by Sasha Lane), is just one of the mysteries that shows up in the show's first trailer.

Take a look:

"What have you done today to earn your place in this crowded world?" asks Cusack's scary Dr. Kevin Christie. That's definitely what a bad guy would say, right?

With a comic about a rogue scientist waging "biological warfare" and a "viral pandemic" ravaging its world, Utopia is looking all too real. Guns, fires, and HAZMAT suits — a perfect trifecta of any action series. It's made even better because it stars a bunch of characters that probably would've attended Comic-Con@Home themselves.

Utopia hits Amazon this fall.
