While devoid of any real footage, the video does confirm that the new series will premiere Friday, May 7. After Sang Kim replaced Steven DeKnight as showrunner on the series all about the next generation of superheroes attempting to live up to their parents, fans were uncertain how this Watchmen-esque story would land on screen. However, now that the first trailer is out, some of those qualms can be laid to rest.
The CGI-heavy teaser features voiceover narration from Josh Duhamel (Sheldon Sampson, aka The Utopian, leader of the superhero team known as The Union) who makes it pretty clear that this is a gritty world, in which god-like heroes act not on pristine ideals, but for personal gain.
Take a look below:
In addition to Duhamel, Jupiter's Legacy has a packed cast that includes Ben Daniels (The Exorcist) as Walter Sampson/Brain-Wave, Sheldon's older brother; Leslie Bibb (Iron Man) as Grace Sampson/Lady Liberty, Sheldon's wife; Mike Wade (Timeless) as Fitz Small/The Flare, heart and soul of The Union; and Matt Lanter (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as George Hutchence/Skyfox, Sheldon's closest friend who turns into a villain.
The Sampson family will certainly echo recent self-aware superhero fare like Watchmen and The Boys, but bring a unique take on the problems of real-life superheroes to the Netflix show. The story follows a second generation of superheroes failing to live up to the great accomplishments of their parents, who first received their meta-human abilities in the 1930s.
“My wife Lucy and I are eleven months into our jobs at Netflix and it’s everything we hoped for to the power of ten. To see a movie based on your work every couple of years is incredibly exciting, but to see them all happening at once like this and with talent this high-end is just off the scale," Millar said in a statement when the adaptation (one of several from Millarworld) was first announced in 2018. "These are writers and directors I’ve privately been sending fan-mail to over the last eighteen months so to be working with them all is just enormously exciting. This really is the greatest creative environment I’ve ever worked in. I can’t wait to switch on my computer every morning."
