A guide to WandaVision on Disney+, with updated details on Marvel's oddest couple

By Donnie Lederer
WandaVision

Before the Scarlet Witch takes a trip with Doctor Strange into the Multiverse of Madness, she and her one true love have an adventure of their own when WandaVision premieres on Disney+.

For those of you who are not versed in the "superhero death" trope, you are probably wondering how this show can even happen, considering Thanos killed (not "snapped," but legit killed) Vision. Don't worry. Marvel has all the answers. They can't tell you yet. But here at SYFY WIRE, we can discuss what we know so far.

THE BASICS

WandaVision will premiere in spring 2021 with six episodes. The cast includes Paul Bettany (Vision), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch), Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau), Kat Dennings (Darcy Lewis), Randall Park (Jimmy Woo), and Kathryn Hahn.

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

As far as a specific plot synopsis, we are in the dark as much as Vision's color scheme at the end of Infinity War (too soon?). With regard to characters, Olsen confirmed the show would delve more into who Wanda is, and make her full transition into her heroic alter ego.

"They probably know Scarlet Witch from the comics and all of her powers and strengths and fears," Olsen told BuzzFeed. "I feel like WandaVision does a beautiful job for our fans to get to see how Wanda becomes the Scarlet Witch. We've never referred to her as 'the Scarlet Witch' on camera before. She's always just been, Wanda. This is that opportunity, and it's a [significant] character deep-dive. It's going to be exciting and, I think, satisfying show for fans."

Olsen also went on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and they discussed the series for a moment. They showed the promotional artwork by Andy Park, depicting Vision and Wanda in sitcom-style roles, with the shadows of their alter egos in the background. The WandaVision talk starts at the 2:30 mark, and a better look at the art by Park is below that.

In an interview with MTV News during the D23 Expo, Bettany added that the idea presented to him was something he couldn't even fathom creating.

"I don't think that myself or Lizzie have ever been more surprised when Kevin pitched the idea to us," he said. "He pitched this idea for a sort of six-hour movie that I would never [have thought of] in a million years, which is why he is the one earning the [huge] bucks. It's so avant-garde, and weird, and messed up, and then moves seamlessly into more familiar territory. But the place where it starts is so odd."

While we don't know what's going to happen, we do know it's going to get weird. We live in a world where a talking raccoon helped revive half the universe. We can't wait to see how this tops it.

DEVELOPMENT

The series will be directed by It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia veteran Matt Shakman. Jac Schaeffer is writing the series. Schaeffer is no stranger to writing in the MCU, as she is the writer for Phase Four's opener, Black Widow.

SPECULATION

When Marvel first announced the series, theories started flying faster than Vision's ability to solve a math problem.

Based on the promo art, a lot of fans felt the series would be an adaptation of Tom King's 2015 Vision series, in which the synthezoid attempted to live a human life when not being an Avenger.

Digital Spy reports that casting calls looking for small children could tease the first appearance of Wiccan and Speed, Wanda's children, and members of the Young Avengers. With a Ms. Marvel series already announced for Disney+, we could be closer than we think to the next generation of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

UPDATES

January 1st:

This morning, the Disney+ Twitter feed posted this video showing their upcoming 2020 shows. Unless they made an error in the editing bay, we can now look forward to WandaVision sometime in 2020.

February 2

During this year's Super Bowl, Disney released a trailer focusing on their Disney+ Marvel shows. Here's your first look at Wandavision.

February 4

Marvel announced December as the official release month for WandaVision.

February 24

Just Jared showed pics of Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) wearing S.W.O.R.D. gear while filming a scene with Randal Park, who portrays FBI agent Jimmy Woo. S.W.O.R.D. stands for Sentient World Observation and Response Department. It's S.H.I.E.L.D. if their only jurisdiction was outer space. This may confirm the location of the actual Nick Fury at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

February 26

In an interview with MTV promoting Onward, Tom Holland was asked what Disney+ series he'd like to appear in as Spider-Man, he said Wandavision. "I think the WandaVision show looks really cool. I don't really know what it's about, and it looks very stylistic. It almost looks like a bit of a sitcom, the way they shot it. I don't really understand what is going on, but I know that it looks really cool," he said. "Paul and Elizabeth are two of the nicest people I know, and I would love to work with them some more and get to know them a little bit better. So if I could put Spider-Man in the WandaVision show, that'd be great. Kevin Feige, if you want to do that, you know my number."
