The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision & more: the geekiest ads from Super Bowl LIV

By Josh Weiss
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Super Bowl Sunday is over and the Kansas City Chiefs came away victorious from the Big Game with the Vince Lombardi Trophy in hand. But let's admit it: You were really cheering to get some pretty awesome ads.

We here at SYFY WIRE attentively tuned into the annual football event for those sweet, sweet commercials, trailers, teasers, and PSAs. Like vampires, we feed off their energy to keep us young and healthy ...

OK, maybe that's only partially true, but we really do savor them! And with so many incredible spots to choose from, we've rounded them all up in one place, so you don't have to scour YouTube for every last 30-second ad that hit the sporting airwaves earlier this evening.

Without any further ado, we present a definitive roundup of the biggest, best, and most creative genre commercials from Super Bowl LIV. Let's kick things off with a truly epic first look at the initial batch of Marvel Cinematic Universe shows coming to Disney+: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Loki.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Loki

The first round of footage from the MCU television shows coming to Disney+ has arrived! The Marvel gods saw fit to gift us with an initial look at The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, AND Loki. The first two will arrive on the streaming platform later this year while Loki debuts in 2021.

Black Widow

Marvel also gave us a new look its upcoming Black Widow, diving a little deeper this time into the pre-Avengers ties that Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) forged back in her formative days in the mother country. With new glimpses of Rachel Weisz’s Melina Vostokoff, along with David Harbour’s Red Guardian and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, the new twist — though it’s one we’ve been expecting — is that Black Widow already had assembled a nefarious, Avengers-style family in the days before she ever decided it was time the get the red out of her ledger. Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow arrives in theaters on May 1.

Walmart

Following the success of its famous sci-fi vehicles spot from last year, Walmart managed to one-up itself with an ad that features some of the most famous sci-fi travelers in pop culture history. Not only do you have the usual suspects like Buzz Lightyear and the Guardians of the Galaxy, but you also get more unexpected icons like the ACK-ing Martians from Mars Attacks! and the unnamed visitors from Arrival. Even C-3PO and R2-D2 have a cameo at the end. This one's got it all, folks.

Mountain Dew

Who knew that Bryan Cranston could make such a convincing Jack Torrance? He's so convincing, in fact, that one wonders why he wasn't cast in Mike Flanagan's Doctor Sleep movie. Moreover, who knew he could make those creepy Shining twins even creepier? Walter White truly is one of the most versatile and talented actors of this generation. As Tracee Ellis Ross (playing Wendy Torrance) will tell you, getting attacked by an ax-wielding maniac is thirsty business. The only tonic is Mountain Dew Zero, apparently.

A Quiet Place Part II

John Krasinski isn't just writing and directing A Quiet Place Part II, he's also starring in it! Yes, the filmmaker is reprising his role as the late patriarch Lee Abbott to show audiences how the invasion of the sound-sensitive monsters came to be. Back in the present, Lee's wife, Evelyn (Emily Blunt), and her two children (Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe) leave the safety of their farm home to find other survivors like Cillian Murphy's Emmett. Co-starring Djimon Hounsou, Part II creeps into theaters on March 20.

Planters Part I

Ah yes, we've come to the crown jewel (or should we say crown peanut?) of this year's Super Bowl commercials. This is the very ad in which Mr. Peanut (aged 104) sacrificed his life in order to save the lives of his Nutmobile companions: Wesley Snipes and Matt Walsh. Peanut's passing sparked a pop culture conversation we never could have imagined.

Planters Part II

Mr. Peanut returns from the dead in the follow-up to Planters' pre-Super Bowl teaser that saw the iconic legume dying in a Nutmobile explosion. Mr. Clean, Kool-Aid, and the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile all turned up for the touching funeral presided over by Wesley Snipes. With a simple Kool-Aid tear and a little bit of sunshine, Mr. Peanut came back as a wise-talking baby.

No Time to Die

Stealth planes, bungee jumping, and Rami Malek's Safin collide in the Big Game teaser for the 25th James Bond movie, No Time to Die. There's even a quick glimpse of an incarcerated Blofeld (Christoph Waltz), who may or may not serve as a Hannibal Lecter-esque advisor to Daniel Craig's 007. Are you ready for another globe-trotting spy-fi adventure?! Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, No Time to Die arrives in theaters April 10.

Jeep

In his first-ever national commercial appearance, Bill Murray is back as Phil Connors for this delightful spoof on Groundhog Day nearly three decades after the original film hit theaters. The ad even gets Stephen Tobolowsky and Brian Doyle-Murray to reprise their roles of "Needlenose" Ned Ryerson and Buster the holiday MC respectively. Upon discovering the 2020 Jeep Gladiator, Connors begins to enjoy his endless time loop, going on bike rides and playing Whac-A-Mole with some company from the rodent-napped Punxsutawney Phil.

Pringles

You know a property has reached peak pop culture status when it receives a Super Bowl ad, which come with a price tag in the millions. The hit Adult Swim series makes its Big Game debut with a 30-second spot that is massively weird for Pringles, but just another day for Rick and Morty. It's glorious to see these two incongruous worlds come together.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run

If you thought the image of SpongeBob and Patrick riding on the back of David Hasselhoff was strange, you ain't seen nothing yet. Mr. SquarePants's third big-screen adventure has both Snoop Dogg and Keanu Reeves! Hitting theaters this May, Sponge on the Run finds SpongeBob and his dim-witted best friend setting off on an epic quest to find Gary, who has gone missing once again.

Minions: The Rise of Gru

Witness the origins of Gru's ascent to the title of super-villain in this eye-popping teaser for Illumination Entertainment's second Minions movie. Set in the late 1960s or thereabouts, the Despicable Me spinoff sequel arrives in theaters July 3. The full trailer arrives this Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Audi

Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) sings "Let it Go" from Disney's Frozen ... need we really say more?

Amazon Alexa

As she waits for her wife to get ready, Ellen DeGeneres wonders what humanity did before Amazon Alexa was invented. What follows is one of the most creative ads thought up for the Big Game. We pop around to the more lower-tech moments in history as a person asks a person (or carrier pigeon) named "Alex" or "Alexi" to play music or tell them the news. It's really quite clever and hey, there's even a dragon during the medieval portion of the ride.

Sonic the Hedgehog

A bunch of athletes famous for their speed talk about who inspired them, only for that inspiration to be revealed as Green Hill Zone native, Sonic the Hedgehog. This ad is meant to promote the SEGA character's big-screen debut, which was directed by Jeff Fowler and opens in theaters Feb. 14. Ben Schwartz voices the blue-quilled character while Jim Carrey takes up the role of the titular hero's arch-nemesis, Dr. Ivo Robotnik.

Heinz Ketchup

One day, when evolution sees fit to grant us with two more eyes, we'll be able to fully appreciate this ketchup commercial, which is actually four commercials in one. Watching them one at a time, however, we spot a haunted house, a spooky diner, a futuristic domicile, and some kind of off-world bazaar. Ketchup truly is a universal language.

SodaStream

A week ago, the company that allows you to carbonate water/create soft drinks in the comfort of your own home brought in Bill Bye the Science Guy to tease that "something big is coming." Now we know that it's a hilarious mini-movie about water being discovered on Mars. It's one of the biggest scientific discoveries of all time ... until one of the astronauts turns the H20 into seltzer and drinks it.

Mulan

Director Niki Caro (The Zookeeper's Wife) takes the reigns for Disney's live-action remake of its 1998 animated classic about a young woman from China who poses as a man in order to serve in a war against invading Huns. In the movie's Big Game spot, Hua Mulan (Yifei Liu) throws a wrench into the plans of Hun leader Bori Khan (Jason Scott Lee) and his partner, a powerful witch named Xian Lang (Gong Li). With no Mushu or lucky cricket to speak of in this version, Mulan 2020 hits theaters on March 27.

Quibi

Quibi pulls a bank heist gone wrong for its first-ever Super Bowl spot. The short-form streaming service from DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg promises to deliver entertainment in less than 10 minutes. Launching April 6, Quibi will feature content from Steven Spielberg, Catherine Hardwicke, and more.

LEGO Masters

We finally have our first look at the reality game show where Will Arnett (voice of LEGO Batman in the LEGO feature films) oversees heated brick-building competitions among hopeful victors. Who will become the next Emmett Brickowski? We'll see when LEGO Masters premieres on Fox this Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Fast & Furious 9

Han Lue is back from the dead in the Big Game spot for director Justin Lin's Fast & Furious 9! The long-running franchise shows no signs of slowing down or pulling over as Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his usual crew of daredevils face off with Dom's estranged assassin brother, Jakob (John Cena). The action-thriller zooms into theaters everywhere May 22.

Snickers

The time come has come for drastic measures, people. Snickers just fed the planet a giant candy bar in the hopes of righting the many wrongs in the world. The jury's still out on whether or not it will actually work, but for now, we'll simply enjoy Luis Guzmán's random cameo at the end. The man is a Glendale Community College legend!

Rocket Mortgage

We now have a top candidate for weirdest ad of Super Bowl LIV, folks. Jason Momoa promotes Rocket Mortage while revealing that his luscious muscles and locks are simply a put-on for the public. In reality, he's a scrawny and bald  dude who can barely lift a metal bar. While this commercial is highly fictional, we'll never look at Arthur Curry quite the same way ever again.

Reese’s Take 5

This mashup announcement for a candy bar made of Reese’s and Take 5 veers into Men in Black territory with a space alien pretending to be a simple office worker. Come to think of it, a genius product that combines Reese’s cups and Take 5 sounds like an invention that could only be cooked up at the MiB headquarters in Battery Park.

Tide/Wonder Woman 1984

We thought we were getting a new trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, but it was actually just a promotion for how Tide allows you to get rid of day-old stains. Even so, getting to see Gal Gadot's Diana Prince interact with a stained shirt-wearing Charlie Day made us get over our disappointment pretty quickly. Directed and co-written by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman 1984 opens in theaters on June 5.

Toyota

One thing we never thought we'd see during the Super Bowl is an homage to The Thing, but here we are. Cobie Smulders and her Toyota Highlander head to the Arctic to save a beleaguered researcher from a rampaging and many-tentacled extra-terrestrial in this commercial that also visits the Old West and an exploding chemical plant. Someone get RJ MacReady on the line—the people in that Highlander may not be human anymore.
